Check out this Star Fox-style mobile prototype by Giulytsme that you can play with one hand using gyro controls.
Can you imagine a Star Fox-style game adapted for mobile? Giulytsme shared an Android prototype inspired by Star Fox that can be played entirely with one hand, using the gyroscope to control movement.

The project is still in development, so Giulytsme did not go too deep into technical details, but did share a few of the challenges and questions that came up during the process.
As a reference, Giulytsme mentions Subway Surfers and Temple Run games that work well for one-handed gameplay, but the movement is limited to the same lanes always.

From there, the idea was to take that format and push it toward something more open, while still keeping the simplicity needed for one-handed gameplay.
The first challenge was clear: how to reduce inputs without losing control. Instead of using virtual joysticks or on-screen buttons, the ship’s movement depends on how you tilt the device.

Giulytsme explains that, by default, Android blends gyroscope data with magnetometer data to stabilize orientation. That works great for things like maps, but not for this kind of project.

Because of that, they chose to work with a more direct reading of the movement, applying a filter to smooth the result and avoid sudden changes in the ship’s movement.
Another important point to resolve was control sensitivity. During playtesting, Giulytsme noticed that everyone used the gyroscope differently.

Some players tilt the device a lot, others barely move it. Some expect inverted controls, sometimes only on one axis, others don’t.

This means a sensitivity that feels perfect for one person can feel completely off for someone else.

To deal with that, the latest version includes options like axis inversion and adjustable sensitivity
According to Giulytsme, finding a solid default setup for that and improving how the game introduces these controls is something they are still working on.

The prototype still uses Star Fox assets and sprites. Giulytsme mentions that the project started more as a fun experiment rather than something meant for release.

But if it ever becomes a full release, their plan is to replace everything with original assets, expand the mechanics, and push the idea of a more open-ended endless runner even further.
